Hawker Chan - Soya Sauce Chicken Drumstick Noodle @ Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre

singapore,hawker chan,soya sauce chicken noodle,food review,chinatown complex market & food centre,hawker centre,335 smith street,michelin,char siew,char siu,roasted pork,了凡香港油鸡饭面,

Hawker Chan was formerly known as Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodles

Located at Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre, this hawker stall propelled to international stardom when it received a One MICHELIN Star in 2016.

I would usually pack a bird home for dinner together with some of their very nice char siew every couple of months but all that change after they clinched the prestigious award.

They were already very popular during their pre-award days, with a perpetual queue forming round the perimeter of the stall. The queue situation worsens after their win.

At times, I wonder is the award really a blessing or a curse?

Char Siu Lang - Tantalizing Char Siu & Siu Yuk Rice @ Blk 2 Jalan Bukit Merah

Update: Char Siu Lang has relocated. It's new address has been updated at the bottom of this post.

If you had been keeping yourself updated with the news, you should have more or less read about Char Siu Lang.

Yes, it is that roast stall from Blk 2 Jalan Bukit Merah whose lucky owner had previously won $1M in a TOTO draw.

With all the media hype about it, I decided to check out the stall which is located within a coffee shop just across the street from ABC Market & Food Centre. Perhaps I could rub off some luck from the owner and be the next $1M prize winner?

Here, you can find the usual offerings of char siu (bbq pork), siu yuk (roasted pork) and siu gai (roasted chicken). Prices for a plate of rice with one type of roast start from $4.50, $5.50 for two types and $7.50 for all three.

Do take note that they do not do roasted duck.

From fatty to lean or in-between, you are welcome to request for your preferred cut of meat. I ordered a 半肥瘦 plate of char siu and siu yuk rice ($5.50).

I first learned about this roast stall called New Rong Liang Ge Cantonese Roast Duck Double Boiled Soup from the TV program "Where The Queue Starts" (排排站查查看) several years ago.

I have bookmarked the stall since then but have never gotten round to trying it. When I visited the newly reopened Old Bukit Purmei Lor Mee recently, I realized this roast stall is located right at the next coffee shop along the same row under Blk 269B Queen Street.

Fast forward one week later, I am back to check them out.

Taste The Kwang's Black - Charcoal Roasted Black Char Siew Wanton Noodle @ Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre

If you think that the Chinese characters 碳烤黑叉燒 on the signboard is the stall's name, then you are very much mistaken.

This stall have several outlets located around Singapore such as at Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Bukit Merah, Clementi, Kovan, New Upper Changi, Tanglin Halt, Upper Bukit Timah and Yishun.

When I first come across the outlet at Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre, I tried looking them up on the internet with this name but did not managed to find anything at all.

The real stall name - 老廣黑味道 (Taste The Kwang's Black) - is found on the side menu panel instead. As the name is not in a prominent location nor particularly eye catching, it is easy to overlook. It actually took me a few days to discover the name from the photo I took.

As my sole purpose for coming to this stall is to try their charcoal roasted char siewI decided to have their char siew wanton noodle ($4).

There are not many reviews about Sin Heng Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice at ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre but the very few that I could find had nothing but positive things to say about them. I decided to seek out this stall to give them a try.

They offer a range of roasted meats such as char siew, roasted pork, roasted duck, roasted chicken and even Hainanese poached chicken. Tau kwa, braised egg and sausage are also available.

I like how the pricing of every possible combination of meats is spelled out clearly without having to worry about exceeding our budget for the meal.

Eager to try as many of their meats as possible, I ordered the char siew and roasted meat rice with chicken meat ($5.50).

The Legend Roasted Meat Rice And Noodle @ Hong Lim Market & Food Centre

To be frank, it was the posters of Bruce Lee that pulled me towards this roast stall called The Legend Roasted Meat Rice And Noodle which is located at the back row on the first level of Hong Lim Market & Food Centre.

When I got nearer, I discovered even more memorabilia like figurines and photographs. When the lady inside the stall saw me taking photos, she asked: "are you also a fan?"

I would be lying if I said I was but I nodded anyway.

"I had been collecting them for over forty years." she said, beaming with pride.

Indeed, one can tell that the stall owner is obsessed with the kungfu star by the amount of memorabilia found all over the stall. You can even see a shadow figure of Bruce on the signboard doing a high kick.

Oh, and do not mistaken the nunchucku (second last photo) hanging on the rack as siew cheong!

Update: Lee Kheong Roasted Delicacy has permanently closed.

Due to online recommendations, I have come to Lee Kheong Roasted Delicacy at Hong Lim Market & Food Centre for its spare ribs but as the stall had just opened for the day, only the char siew, roasted pork and roasted duck are available.

What a shame it was not ready yet because the photo of the spare ribs that I saw was so succulent looking I wished I could sink my teeth into them right there and then.

Apart from Tien Lai Rice StallHong Man Tian Char Siew Roast Pork is the other roast stall located on the same floor at Taman Jurong Market & Food Centre. I have walked past this stall many times and honestly, I did not intend to review this stall since I had already tried Tien Lai but I eventually succumbed due to the eye-catching signboard.

This stall had the same menu as Tien Laichar siew, roasted pork, roasted duck and soy chicken. Even their pricing are quite competitive.

However, the edge Hong Man Tian have is you can have their roasts with either rice, noodle or hor fun and a bowl of complimentary soup. Tien Lai only served theirs with rice and no soup.

I decided to give Hong Man Tian a try and ordered a regular plate of rice with roasted duck meat and char siew ($4/$5).

Tien Lai Rice Stall at Taman Jurong Market & Food Centre is known for their roasts, particularly their char siew which is rated very highly among foodies online.

During my previous visits to the food centre, I noticed that a line of customers have already formed in front of the stall even before they are ready for business.

I decided not to join the queue then because the line only gets increasingly longer by the minute. Today, I was surprised to see only three customers in the queue therefore, I wasted no time in joining them.

Leong Wei Roasted Delights - $2 Char Siew Rice @ Holland Drive Market & Food Centre

To be honest, I was drawn to Leong Wei Roasted Delights by its low price. Their char siew rice, roasted pork rice and roasted chicken rice starts from $2. In this economy when everyone is struggling to cope amid rising costs, such affordability is truly a god send.

Kudos to the stall owners for keeping prices affordable to the lower income group.

I guess I am not the only one to feel the crunch; thirty minutes before the stall is due to open at 11.30am, a snaking queue made up mainly of retirees, has already formed.

Update: Da Chang Jin Handmade Chee Cheong Fun has permanently closed.

Da Chang Jin Chee Cheong Fun at Holland Drive Market & Food Centre serves the Hong Kong-styled rice roll. You can pick an assortment of fillings to have inside your rice roll ranging from the usual char siew to the more exotic flying fish roe and salmon.

Since it is my first time at this stall, I decided to go for the original ($2.50) without fillings so I could better appreciate the rice roll in its simplicity.

Unlike the Singapore-styled chee cheong fun which is factory supplied, the Hong Kong version is made from scratch at the stall upon ordering. The rice-flour batter is first poured on a piece of white cloth over a steamer. Once the rice sheet forms, the entire cloth is lifted and transferred to a oiled metal tray by the side where the rice sheet is separated from the cloth. Your desired filling is then added and rolled into shape before a special concoction of soy sauce is ladled on.

Happy World Roast at Empress Road Market & Food Centre specializes in Cantonese roast meats. Other than the usual roasts like char siew (bbq pork), siew yoke (roasted pork) and roasted chicken, they also serve Hainanese chicken.

After studying the menu, I decided to go for their char siew and siew yoke set for one person ($6). The set includes a plate of rice drizzled with dark soy, a single portion of char siew and siew yoke served separately, a bowl of stewed cabbage and a bowl of peanut soup.

The reason I chose to have this is because I like stewed cabbage and it is quite unheard of to have a roast stall offering this. Thus, I wanted to check out how this one person char siew and siew yoke set is like.

Soon Heng Hong Kong Style Charcoal Roast at Havelock Road Cooked Food Centre serves the usual roasts like char siew, roasted pork (siew yok/sio bak), roasted duck and roasted chicken.

As I was craving for roasted pork, I ordered the char siew and roasted pork combo with rice ($4). While the auntie was preparing my order, my gaze fell upon the rolls of pig's skin in the window. How could I resist the temptation not to get some?

The overall cost came up to $5 so that makes the pig's skin only a dollar.

Shocking would be an understatement to describe my first impression of Lau Phua Chay Roasted Delicacies at Alexandra Village Food Centre.

I was actually queuing for the avocado juice next door during my previous visit to the food centre when I saw the darkest char siew I had ever seen hanging behind the glass window.

That certainly got my attention and I made a mental note to try this out during my next visit here.
